ASEAN Skills Competition Begins, Sees Enthusiastic Participation

SERDANG, Sept 24 (Bernama) -- Two hundred and seventy-six participants from ASEAN countries were in enthusiastic mode as they participated in the 11th ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) 2016 at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) here Saturday.
The six-day event, beginning Friday, saw 50 Malaysian participants contesting in 25 skills categories including automobile, aircraft maintenance, welding, cooking, cabinet making, electronics, hairstyling and fashion technology.
On Wednesday, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem had said Malaysia hoped to win 15 gold medals in the skills competition in the fields of engineering, car manufacturing, hospitality and culinary skills.
This is the third time Malaysia is hosting the ASC after 1995 and 2008. At the 2014 ASC, Malaysia won nine gold medals.
About 10.30am, Riot arrived at MAEPS and also toured the competition areas for about an hour to offer words of encouragement and good luck to the ASC participants.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Skills Competition Council chairman Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib said Malaysian participants would compete to book their place at the World Skills Competition (WSC) 2017 in Abu Dhabi next year.
In the programme book of the bi-annual event, he said the skills competition was benchmarked with WSC standards for promoting and upgrading the skills standards in the region to be on par with global standards.
Ismail, who is also human resources deputy minister said the competition would also highlight the vital role of skilled workers in becoming the pillars for the national development of ASEAN and the region as a whole.
Themed 'Skills For A Brighter Future, the skills competition, held concurrently with the National Skills Exposition and Carnival (KEKK) from Sept 19 to 28, is expected to attract 100,000 visitors.
